Winterizing a Houston Pool

Part 10 of 10: Pool Ownership 101

Full winterization, the kind practiced in climates with a real winter, is largely unnecessary here; the real task is freeze protection for the handful of nights a year it matters. This site is built around the high end of what gunite construction allows: negative/infinity edges, swim-up bars, sun shelves, fire-and-water features, and full outdoor-living integration with decking, kitchens, and shade structures designed alongside the pool, not as an afterthought.

Houston-area pools typically run year-round, so "winterizing" here means preparing equipment for occasional hard freezes, not shutting the pool down for months.

  1. Know the freeze-protection trigger point

Most automated systems and manual protocols use roughly 36-38°F as the threshold to start protective circulation, since pipes can freeze even when air temperature is just above the 32°F mark due to wind chill and overnight lows.

  2. Set equipment to auto-circulate during freeze warnings

Running the pump continuously during a freeze event keeps water moving through exposed plumbing, which prevents the standing water that actually freezes and cracks pipes or fittings.

  3. Insulate exposed above-ground plumbing

Pipe insulation or simple wrapping on exposed equipment-pad plumbing reduces freeze risk for the sections not protected by constant flow alone.

  4. Do not drain the pool for a freeze event

A full pool provides hydrostatic pressure that helps protect the structure; draining a gunite pool, especially, before a freeze creates more risk (shell and plumbing stress) than it solves.

  5. Check equipment after the freeze passes

Inspect pump, filter, and heater for any cracked fittings once temperatures rise back above freezing, since a crack that occurred during the cold snap may not leak visibly until things thaw.
