Outdoor Kitchen Planning Guide
An outdoor kitchen built alongside a pool has an advantage a stand-alone kitchen retrofit does not: the utility runs and grading can be planned together instead of cut in after the fact. This site is built around the high end of what gunite construction allows: negative/infinity edges, swim-up bars, sun shelves, fire-and-water features, and full outdoor-living integration with decking, kitchens, and shade structures designed alongside the pool, not as an afterthought.

Utilities Come First
Gas line routing (for a grill or pizza oven), electrical for refrigeration and lighting, and water/drain lines for a sink all need to be mapped before decking or the pool shell is finalized if the kitchen sits near the pool, since trenching through finished hardscape later is far more disruptive and costly.
Deciding early whether the kitchen runs on propane or natural gas, and whether it needs a dedicated electrical circuit, avoids a mid-project change order once the layout is already set.
Layout and Material Choices
A functional outdoor kitchen generally needs a work triangle, similar logic to an indoor kitchen, between the grill, prep space, and refrigeration, not scattered appliances with no connecting counter space. Covered structures (pergola, cabana roof) protect appliances from Houston's sun and rain and extend equipment life considerably versus a fully exposed setup.
Materials matter more outdoors than indoors: stainless steel appliances rated for outdoor/marine-grade use resist Gulf Coast humidity better than indoor-rated units, and countertop materials (granite, concrete, certain porcelains) need to handle sun exposure and temperature swings without cracking.
