Gunite vs. Fiberglass vs. Vinyl Pools
The three pool-construction methods are really three different answers to the same question: how much custom shape is worth how much time and money. This site is built around the high end of what gunite construction allows: negative/infinity edges, swim-up bars, sun shelves, fire-and-water features, and full outdoor-living integration with decking, kitchens, and shade structures designed alongside the pool, not as an afterthought.

Construction and Shape
Gunite (concrete) pools are built on-site over a rebar cage, sprayed and hand-shaped, which allows essentially any shape, depth, or feature. Fiberglass pools arrive as a single pre-manufactured shell set into an excavated base, limited to the manufacturer's mold lineup. Vinyl-liner pools use a frame structure (steel, polymer, or concrete block) lined with a flexible vinyl sheet, offering more shape flexibility than fiberglass but less than gunite.
Timeline, Cost, and Maintenance
Gunite takes the longest to build, several months through sequential phases, and costs the most upfront, but it resists cracking from Texas clay-soil movement when properly engineered and lasts decades with periodic resurfacing. Fiberglass installs fastest, often in weeks, with lower long-term maintenance since the gel-coat resists algae, but offers the least shape customization. Vinyl-liner pools typically cost less upfront than gunite but need liner replacement roughly every 7-15 years, an ongoing cost gunite and fiberglass do not carry in the same way.
FAQs
Which pool type is best for Houston-area clay soil?
Gunite, properly engineered with the right rebar density and bond-beam detailing for local soil, handles seasonal clay expansion and contraction better than a prefabricated shell; fiberglass can also work well if the base is properly engineered, but shape is limited.
Is vinyl-liner construction common in the Houston area?
Less common than gunite or fiberglass for new custom builds in this market; most new construction here is gunite (for custom shape) or fiberglass (for speed and lower maintenance).
